Phoenix Family works inside affordable housing communities every day. Volunteers step into that steady presence.

What happens when you show up

In Reading Labs, you might sit beside a child as they practice reading out loud. Some days the words come easily. Some days they do not. What matters most is that you come back.

That consistency helps children build skills over time, right where they live, with adults who are steady and encouraging.

How volunteers support older adults

At Mobile Pantry distributions in our senior communities, volunteers help make sure older adults have access to the food they need. It is practical support that helps residents stay steady in the homes they already have.

In our senior communities, you might also help set up for community bingo, a wellness class, or another gathering that brings residents together. These small, regular moments help people stay connected and continue living independently in the homes they already have.

Showing up consistently changes what a community feels like.

How volunteering works

Start with one application. We will guide you from there.

Apply

Complete the volunteer application so we can learn your availability and interests.

Connect

Our Volunteer Coordinator follows up to talk through opportunities at our communities.

Show up

Once scheduled, we make sure you know where to go, what to expect, and who you will meet.

Before you apply

Age & screening

Many volunteer opportunities require participants to be at least 18 years old. Some roles involve additional screening or a background check. Volunteers under 18 may be asked to serve alongside a parent or guardian, depending on the opportunity.

When programs happen

Most programs operate during the weekdays and early evenings, especially Reading Labs. Weekend opportunities are more limited.

Court-ordered hours

If you are seeking court-ordered or required service hours, please contact us before applying so we can confirm whether we are able to accommodate your request.

Location & commitment

Because our work takes place inside specific affordable housing communities, volunteer opportunities are tied to those locations. If you have questions about time commitment or site locations, reach out. We would rather answer questions up front than have you guess.

One afternoon or week after week

We love both. Here is how each one typically shows up.

One afternoon

Great for groups and first-time volunteers

Help with a community event, a hands-on project, or a scheduled opportunity that makes a real difference in a short window of time.

Week after week

Great for Reading Labs and ongoing roles

Return on a steady schedule, build familiarity, and become a consistent face in the life of a community.
