Phoenix Family Receives $10,000 Grant from Irven E. and Nevada P. Linscomb Foundation

The Irven E. and Nevada P. Linscomb Foundation recently awarded $10,000 in support of Phoenix Family's School Readiness Program at Parvin Estates in North Kansas City. "Thanks to the Irven E. and Nevada P. Linscomb Foundation, this program is changing kids lives," say Kimber Myers Givner, Executive Director of Phoenix Family.

The program, in its fourth year, focuses on offering an experience-rich environment where children develop skills through tangible experiences that are culturally sensitive and appropriate. Participants attend the program two hours daily during the school year while their older siblings attend the after-school program. Each child undergoes an individual assessment during the first week of the program to determine readiness. All activities stimulate and encourage the development of language, physical, cognitive, social, and emotional skills. The program works with each child to develop print and numeracy awareness; color recognition; an understanding of and usage of an increasingly complex and varied vocabulary; fine and gross motor skills; and, increasing progress toward acquisition of the English language.
